Alcoholics
My father’s father
a man I never met
drank bourbon out of short glasses and left
ring indentations in my grandmother’s chest.
That filled my father with cautious tenderness
for a boy that would later drink
wild turkey alone in a dark room
even after all the lectures.
Fear, after generations, dilutes.
